Judy Robb is a North American artist living and working in Wisconsin’s Driftless Region. Her work grows from daily life and close observation of the world around her—woodlands, prairies, gardens and rolling hills, the birds and wildlife that inhabit them, and the people, objects and memories that carry stories from past to present.
Her paintings are shaped by the seasons and by the encounters that happen along the way. A pileated woodpecker moving through the woods. Crows gathering in September. An owl calling at dusk. Milkweed growing alongside a vegetable garden. Wildlife appearing unexpectedly at the edge of the forest. These ordinary moments become starting points for exploring nature, memory and our relationship to place.
Much of Robb’s recent work reflects a growing awareness of the fragility of the natural world. The Driftless landscape may appear timeless and resilient, yet its birds, pollinators, native plants and wildlife exist within an intricate web of relationships. Her paintings celebrate the character and beauty of these inhabitants while drawing attention to the habitats and connections upon which they depend.
Animals often meet the viewer directly in her work. Robb gives her subjects personality and presence, inviting us to see them not simply as elements of a landscape, but as neighbors living their lives alongside our own. Her work moves between experience, logic and emotion, with an underlying sense of curiosity and hope.
“I work primarily in oil on paper, linen and canvas. I’m drawn to the history of oil paint—the depth, richness and sense of connection it gives me to painters and storytellers who came before.”
At the heart of Robb’s work is the act of paying attention. She believes that what we notice becomes familiar; what becomes familiar can become valued; and what we value, we may choose to protect.
